How Dr. Keon Nia became a LASIK eye surgeon
Part II
Immediately after my first summer of research I began working on an ENT project, which exposed me to the field of ophthalmology – right away I was intrigued. There were so many aspects about ophthalmology had me captivated. I was fascinated with the surgeon’s ability to help patients. It was amazing to see a patient who was partially blind due to cataracts, visit a surgeon and within 24 hours that same patient could then clearly see the smile on their grand-child’s face. With LASIK as well, it was eye-opening to see patients with very high refractive errors come back in the day after LASIK surgery and be able to see 20/20. I quickly discovered that being able to help someone with their vision was a great way to make a huge difference in a person’s life. That is what has made ophthalmology a very rewarding field for me.
The science of ophthalmology was also intriguing to me. Not just the different functions of the eye, but all the different lasers that surgeons can use to help patients. I was surprised to see that there are different lasers that a surgeon can use to improve vision, treat glaucoma, or even prevent a retinal detachment…
