How Dr. Keon Nia became a LASIK eye surgeon
Part I
For my very first blog, I thought I would take the time to reminisce about how I entered the compelling field of laser eye surgery.
The desire to become a doctor first struck me in high school. I realized that becoming a surgeon would allow me to help people and further explore my interest in medical sciences. It would also allow me to use my hands – which was appealing since one of my favorite pastimes was making model ships. I remained ambitious and determined through my high school years, and was overjoyed when I was accepted into medical school at the University of Toronto.
I began my medical studies with an open mind, interested in various fields of medicine and willing to absorb all the information I could. I was given some helpful direction after my first four years, as I was fortunate enough to receive a summer research scholarship in the medical field of otolaryngology, otherwise known as ENT (ear, nose and throat). I studied hard and enjoyed the field of ENT – publishing three research articles during my studies. It was actually during my first summer that I published an article about hearing loss which had me very fascinated with the field of ENT, but that fascination didn’t last very long…
